Josie Pork Farm in St. Peter, MN was experiencing pressure from neighbors about the continuous odor emanating from their 2 acre hog-waste lagoon. In an effort to avoid the costs associated with installing a cover to block the odor, they tried Enviro-Culture®. This report tracks the use of Enviro-Culture® in this application over a 6 week period. Photos and observations were made by a third party engineer (Robert Mensch of Mensch Engineering, Fairmount, MN) over the duration of the trial. The results were impressive to all parties involved. |

| August 7: Enviro-Culture® was applied to the lagoon via 200 gallons water dilution and application by spraying diluted product around perimeter of lagoon. The lagoon (shown left prior to treatment) had an offensive septic odor obviously coming from the 6" to 8" layer of scum covering 80% of the surface. This photo is typical of many waste lagoons located at dairies and hog farms throughout the country. Samples were extracted for laboratory analysis for Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Nitrate, Phosphate, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and pH August 26: Robert Mensch performed the first follow-up inspection and reported the following: "Walked all the way around the lagoon. Wind was calm. Detected no odor from lagoon. Active bubbling at south end. Scum crust had thinned and was covering only 50% of surface as compared to 80% prior to treatment. Appears to be working as was expected by the product representative." |

September 13: Robert Mensch performed the second follow-up inspection and reported the following: "Again, walked all the way around the lagoon. The only odor from lagoon was that similar to freshly plowed soil. Scum crust had continued thinning and was covering only 25% of surface as compared to 80% prior to treatment. September 30: Robert Mensch performed the final follow-up inspection and reported the following: "Drove around the lagoon. No odor from lagoon detected. Scum crust had continued thinning and was covering only 5% of surface and only on edges as compared to 80% prior to treatment (see photo at right)." Follow-up sampling was performed for Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Nitrate, Phosphate, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), and pH. Results provided below: |
