Biological controls are living organisms that naturally control other pest organisms. Examples would include some of the following: bacteria, fungi and insects. All are currently being tested for their ability to reduce aquatic plant infestations.

Waterfowl, such as swans, have also been used to keep small ponds free from weeds. However, since they require husbandry and protection from predators, it tends to be surpassed for another control method.

Currently, the most widely used biological control method is the introduction of an herbivorous fish into the pond. Known as a grass carp or white amur, this fish consumes filamentous algae (thin, green algae) and most submersed plants. However, since this fish has the potential to strip all underwater vegetation from the body of water, it cannot be released in natural lakes/wetland areas where vegetation is critical to fish and wildlife.
